I know an elderly couple that happens to buy a new car for each of them every 6 or 8 years. When I ask them why they have this ‘policy’ they give the following reasons: “We aren’t car technicians, we want a good car, we don’t want to go back to the garage all the time, and we can afford it.”
Their last argument may be their most valid and also highly personal. This family is willing to take a huge new-car depreciation hit. Depreciation, or the loss in a car’s value over time, is a sneaky hidden cost. Because of depreciation, a new car loses between 20 and 30 percent of its value the moment it rolls off the dealer’s lot. Some cars can depreciate up to 50 percent in the first three years.
It’s clear that from a economical perspective, this family’s choice doesn’t make sense to a business owner. However, we are talking about an affluent couple who are willing to pay for an emotion. They don’t want to think about going to the garage, let alone getting stuck at the side of the road. They are willing to pay for a the feeling of security.
For used machinery in the plastics processing industry, we cannot compare the purchasing motifs of my elderly friends with the arguments that are at stake when purchasing a new car. But the element of depreciation stays the same. Unlike depreciation, repairs and maintenance are hard costs that must be addressed as they arise. GOS offers all the answers to these questions. For the past decade GOS has sold many pre-owned and used machines. The reasons buyers chose for us are simple:
- GOS offers check and test, upgrading, repair and maintenance to the extent the buyer decides
- Cost of purchase tremendously lower
- Often way faster available than new machines
- Machines are sold ‘as is’ or with warranties. A buyer with a well equipped technical department may chose to buy ‘as is’.
If you consider buying a new machine, think twice. Look at this video of the refurbishment of a pre owned offset printer by GOS and ask what GOS has available and how I can help you.
